How to receive money in Armenia as a freelancer in 2026
How to receive money in Armenia from foreign clients: SWIFT, Payoneer, Wise, PayPal and Stripe in 2026, which account to use, and what your IE declares.

If you work for clients abroad, the short answer to how to receive money in Armenia is this: a SWIFT wire in dollars or euros straight into an Armenian bank account, or Payoneer with a withdrawal to a local bank. Stripe does not support Armenia, PayPal's Armenian site only lets you send and pay, and Wise lets Armenian residents send money but not hold a balance or get account details. Wise can still deliver drams to your Armenian account if the client is the one using it.
The route is the easy part. The money that arrives is turnover of your individual entrepreneur (IE), it has to be converted into drams for the quarterly report, and the rule for that conversion is one of the things nobody has confirmed yet. This post covers both halves: what works for getting paid, and what the payment means for your IE.
How to receive money in Armenia from foreign clients: the routes in 2026
This is what we found on each provider's own pages in October 2026. Provider rules change without notice, so check again before you send a client your payment details.
| Route | Works into Armenia? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| SWIFT wire to an Armenian bank | Yes | The standard route, in USD or EUR. The bank may ask questions about the payment |
| Payoneer | Yes | No AMD balance. One bank documents a direct link in its app, with limits |
| Wise | Partly | A client can send AMD to your Armenian account. As a resident you cannot hold money, get account details or a card |
| PayPal | Sending only | The Armenian site shows sending and paying, no receiving or withdrawal |
| Stripe | No | Armenia is not on Stripe's list of supported countries |
| Deel, Upwork and similar | Check your account | We have not verified their payout options for Armenia |
SWIFT wires into an Armenian account
A direct wire is what most foreign agencies and companies already know how to do, and it is the route Armenian banks are built for. You give the client your account number, the bank's SWIFT code and the beneficiary name exactly as the bank holds it. For an IE that usually means your name as it appears in the State Register. Copy it from the bank's own account details rather than typing it from memory.
Ask your bank two things before the first invoice: which currencies the account can receive, and whether incoming wires land in that currency or are converted to drams on arrival. Banks differ, and the conversion rate a bank applies is its own, not the one the tax rules use.
Payoneer
Payoneer is the usual alternative when a client or a platform pays through it. It does not hold drams, so the balance sits in dollars or euros until you move it out.
The one integration we found documented by a bank itself is Converse Bank's: its mobile app links to a Payoneer account and moves USD or EUR into a Converse account instantly. A single transfer can be up to USD 5,000, the monthly maximum is USD 10,000, and money cannot go back from Converse to Payoneer. The bank's FAQ is undated, so ask the bank whether those limits still apply. Withdrawals from Payoneer to other Armenian banks are reported by law firms and freelancer blogs, but we have not seen a bank document for them.
The monthly cap is the number to watch. A developer who is paid once a quarter in one large sum can hit it with a single payment.
Wise
Wise is the route most people get wrong, partly because older guides said Wise opens accounts for Armenian residents. Its own help centre says otherwise. Armenia is not on the list of countries whose residents can hold money in Wise, so you can register and send, but you get no balance and no account details to give clients. The Wise card is not issued in Armenia either.
What does work is the other direction. A client in Germany or the UK who uses Wise can send money to Armenia and have it land in drams in your Armenian bank account. For the client it looks like any Wise transfer; for you it arrives as a local credit.
Wise does not operate in Russia or Iran at all, and it states that restriction by location, not by passport. How it verifies Russian or Iranian citizens who live in Armenia is not stated, so do not count on it until your own account is verified.
PayPal and Stripe
PayPal's Armenian site offers sending and paying, with none of the request-money or business sections you see on, say, the Georgian site. PayPal says availability varies by country and only shows the full picture after login, so we cannot point to a page that says "send only" in so many words. In practice, plan as if you cannot receive or withdraw with a PayPal account registered in Armenia.
Stripe is simpler: Armenia is not on its list of supported countries, not even as a preview market. A Stripe account for an Armenian IE is not something you can open.
Deel, Upwork and other platforms
We have not verified the withdrawal methods that Deel, Upwork or similar platforms offer for Armenia, and they change. Log in and look at the payout options your account shows for Armenia, then check each one against the routes above. Whatever the platform, the tax side below is the same: what the client paid for your work is turnover of your IE.
Can I receive into a personal account or do I need an IE account?
None of the tax rules in our rule set say which account the money has to land in. Turnover tax is charged on turnover from the activity, not on a bank account. So the question is practical rather than legal, and the practical answer leans towards a separate account for the IE.
The reasons are boring and real. Banks price business accounts separately: Ardshinbank, for example, published a separate tariff for accounts of non-resident companies and individual entrepreneurs. That document expired in January 2026, so ask for the current one. A compliance officer looking at regular wires from a foreign company into a personal account will ask what they are, and an IE account answers that before anyone asks. It also makes the quarterly report easier, because every credit on that account is a client payment and nothing else.
Ask your bank whether it opens a separate IE account or attaches the IE to your personal one. Our guide to opening a bank account in Armenia as a foreigner covers the documents and the in-person visit. If you have not registered an IE at all and wonder whether you need to, that is a different question, covered in freelancer as a private individual or an IE.
What the bank will ask about incoming wires
Expect questions, especially on the first payments from a new client. Since August 12, 2026Estimate: Not yet confirmed by an official source. Last checked October 5, 2026., a Central Bank resolution on sanctions risk requires banks to screen clients, counterparties and intermediaries, and it lets them suspend or reject transactions. It covers sanctions imposed by any state or international organisation, not only those on Russia. A bank has to re-assess a client within 1Estimate: Not yet confirmed by an official source. Last checked October 5, 2026. business day of a change in a sanctions list or in the client's data.
For an ordinary freelancer that means a payment can be held while the bank asks who sent it and why. Have these ready before it happens:
- the contract or the signed order with the client
- the invoice that matches the payment, in the same amount and currency
- something that shows the client is a real business, such as its website or registry entry
- for a platform payout, the platform's statement for that payment
Russian citizens have had a harder time. Since late 2025 some Armenian banks have refused accounts to Russians, rejected some payments and closed some accounts, citing internal compliance rather than any formal ban. For Iranian citizens, consultancies report that foreign-currency accounts and SWIFT transfers can be refused or delayed, and that some banks open accounts only in drams. Those reports come from agencies, not from banks, and no bank has published a current policy on Iranian clients.
Expect to be asked where you are tax resident. Armenia exchanges account data under the common reporting standard, and according to KPMG accounts of non-residents opened from January 1, 2024Estimate: Not yet confirmed by an official source. Last checked October 5, 2026. are reportable whatever the balance. That is not a reason to avoid an Armenian account, but it is a reason to fill the self-certification form truthfully.
How invoices and contracts link to turnover-tax reporting
A turnover-tax IE calculates and pays tax every quarter, by day 20Estimate: Uses at least one rule that an accountant has not verified yet. of the month after the quarter ends DL-04: Quarterly turnover tax. Sources agree, not verified. Each foreign payment ends up as a line in that report, converted to drams. The invoice and the contract are what you would show the State Revenue Committee (SRC) if it asked where a figure came from.
Take a designer billing a German agency in euros. Her contract names the IE as the supplier, not her as a private person. Her invoice carries the IE's registered name, its taxpayer number (TIN), a description of the work, the amount in euros and the account the money goes to. The bank's credit advice for the payment goes in the same folder. Three documents per payment, kept for every quarter, and most questions from a bank or the SRC answer themselves.
Describe the work as what it is. The turnover rate depends on the activity: in our rule set qualifying IT work pays 1%Estimate: Uses at least one rule that an accountant has not verified yet. and most other services 10%Estimate: Uses at least one rule that an accountant has not verified yet.. A software developer whose invoices say "consulting" is inviting a question about which rate applies. Our turnover tax rates by activity post lists the rates and the exclusions.
Some things we cannot answer for you yet:
- whether you also have to issue an electronic invoice in the SRC's own system for a foreign client
- whether turnover is the amount you invoiced or what arrives after Payoneer or platform fees; our rule set treats expense deductions under turnover tax as disputed TT-04: Expenses under turnover tax. Sources disagree
- which quarter an invoice belongs to when the work is done in December and paid in January
Settle these with an accountant before the first report, not after. The answers change the number in the report, and the third one changes which quarter it goes in.
All of this is turnover. To see the estimated tax and fixed charges on your yearly total, put it into the calculator. You can enter the amount in dollars, euros or roubles, and it converts once, at input, with a default rate you can edit.

Which exchange rate converts USD or EUR to AMD for tax?
We do not have a confirmed answer, and you should be wary of anyone who gives one without a source. Our rule set marks the conversion rule as unknown FXR-01: Currency conversion. Not confirmed: which rate applies, and on which date.
Our own reading of the Tax Code, as amended from mid-2026, is that income is converted at the Central Bank of Armenia's average rate published on the working day before the moment of supply. For a service, that moment would be when the work is completed or when the electronic invoice is confirmed. A Russian-language community guide describes a similar rule based on the day before the invoice. Neither has been confirmed by an accountant, so the calculator does not use it yet.
Two things follow even before it is confirmed. The rate that counts for tax is very likely not the rate your bank gives you when it converts the wire, and the date that counts may not be the day the money arrives. Keep a note of the Central Bank rate for the invoice date and for the date of payment, so you can redo the figures once the rule is settled.
Exchange rates also move you between bands without any new work. Stamp duty, for example, jumps from AMD 12,000Estimate: Uses at least one rule that an accountant has not verified yet. to AMD 120,000Estimate: Uses at least one rule that an accountant has not verified yet. a year once income passes AMD 12,000,000Estimate: Uses at least one rule that an accountant has not verified yet.. A weaker dram in the autumn can push a dollar earner over that line.
Is VAT relevant for services exported to foreign clients?
For most freelancers on turnover tax, not in our rule set. VAT registration becomes mandatory above AMD 115,000,000Estimate: Uses at least one rule that an accountant has not verified yet. a year, at a rate of 20%Estimate: Uses at least one rule that an accountant has not verified yet. VAT-01: VAT registration threshold. Sources agree, not verified. That is the same line at which turnover tax stops being available TT-01: Turnover tax cap. Sources agree, not verified, which is AMD 115,000,000Estimate: Uses at least one rule that an accountant has not verified yet. of prior-year turnover. Our reading of the Tax Code is that an IE on turnover tax is not a VAT payer at all, but that reading is still waiting for an accountant.
The general system is where it gets unclear. Whether a general-system IE charges VAT on services exported to foreign clients is an open question in our rule set GS-03: VAT on services for foreign clients. Not confirmed. One accounting source says many services to foreign clients can be zero-rated if documented, and our reading of the Tax Code points the same way for services such as software, design, marketing and engineering supplied to foreign customers. What documents the SRC wants for that zero rate, we could not find. The calculator does not compute VAT, and an IE heading for the general system should see an accountant before invoicing anyone.
Questions people ask
Does PayPal work in Armenia?
For sending and paying, yes. For receiving and withdrawing, plan as if it does not: PayPal's Armenian site shows no receiving features, although PayPal says availability depends on the account.
Can I withdraw Payoneer to an Armenian bank?
Yes. Converse Bank documents a direct link in its app, with a cap of USD 10,000 a month. Withdrawals to other banks are reported by secondary sources. Payoneer does not hold drams.
Can I open a Wise account in Armenia?
You can register and send money. You cannot hold a balance, get account details or get the card as a resident of Armenia. A client can still pay you through Wise into your Armenian bank account in drams.
Is Stripe available in Armenia?
No. Armenia is not on Stripe's list of supported or preview countries.
Do I pay tax on money I leave in Payoneer?
Leaving it there does not take it out of your turnover. By our reading, turnover arises from the work you supplied, not from the money reaching an Armenian bank. Declare it in the quarter it belongs to, and ask an accountant which quarter that is if the dates straddle two.
Do foreign payments count for the residence permit test?
They can. From November 1, 2026, an IE can support a residence application with turnover of AMD 1,000,000 in the 60 days before applying, or a balance of AMD 1,000,000 across its accounts. After the permit is granted, the SRC must show taxes calculated from the business within 180 days, or the status lapses. Money left in Payoneer and never declared adds nothing to the tax record, and as far as we can tell nothing to the IE's account balance either. Details are in our checklist for the new law on foreigners.
